The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that come with most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
