Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch flipping and you become starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
