England and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

The group draw was overseen by sporting icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their memorable meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the pools conclude according to the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the very first time in the competition's history.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
